Jaguar Land Rover is grappling with a production halt due to a cyber attack, prompting concerns over supplier bankruptcies. Learn more about the situation and the potential government intervention.
JLR Faces Production Shutdown: Urgent Calls for Government Support
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been unable to produce vehicles at any of its global facilities since a severe cyber attack struck on September 1st. As a result, there are growing fears that some suppliers may face bankruptcy due to the ongoing disruptions. With no production reported in three weeks, JLR’s situation underscores the vulnerability of modern manufacturing to cyber threats.
What Happened?
The cyber attack on JLR is believed to be linked to a hacking group that previously targeted Marks & Spencer earlier this year. In response to the attack, JLR paused its computer systems on September 2nd to mitigate further damage. However, the restoration process remains incomplete, leaving retailers and partners unable to place parts orders. Estimates suggest the financial impact could be as high as £5 million per day, significantly affecting JLR's revenue and operational stability.
Former Aston Martin CEO, Andy Palmer, expressed concerns to the BBC, indicating that he would not be shocked to see bankruptcies among JLR’s suppliers if the production halt continues.
Threats to Employment
As the shutdown drags on, thousands of workers within JLR’s supply chain are facing immediate threats to their jobs. A furlough scheme similar to what was enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic has been proposed to cushion the impact of this crisis. Liam Byrne, the chair of the Commons Business and Trade Committee, stated that swift government action is vital to prevent long-term damage to the UK's advanced manufacturing sector.
